Moulting Supplements
Moulting is a natural process of replacing old feathers with new ones. As these feather grow in, they are wrapped in sheaths that feel itchy to the bird. Their immune system also takes a hit as they exert energy in feather growth. During the moult, there is an increased demand for protein, calcium, and iron. Amino acids, in particular, is especially helpful during this process. Building a new feather requires a lot of energy and plenty of good quality nutrients.
The best support for a moulting bird is to offer UV lighting and Egg Food. UV Lighting should already be offered year-round for added benefits, but Egg Food can also be offered throughout the year. Egg Food contains vitamins, amino acids, protein, and calcium for a nutrient-rich boost. We also carry an “insectivore” variety which is designed for finches and other softbills who eat insects in the wild.
Higgins Protein Egg Food provides your birds with an excellent source of protein derived from both animal and plant sources. Companion bird foods that do not contain animal proteins can be deficient in the necessary amino acids, methionine and lysine. Protein Egg Food is all natural (with added vitamins and minerals) and made with baked whole eggs, whole grain bread crumbs and pure honey.
Tropican Egg Granules is a formulated egg food pellet that offers the needed protein, fats and grains for vivid feather growth and healthy muscles and bones. Tropimix Egg Food Seed Mix is great for birds who are on a seed diet already because it looks more familiar to them, and therefore they are very likely to eat it without hesitation. What makes this seed diet different is that is contains Tropican Egg Granules (as mentioned above), which provide essential nutrients to ensure optimal health, vibrant feathers and strong bones for your pet bird. All ingredients are 100% edible and can be served dry or moistened. By adding a small amount of hot water, the softened components will coat your bird’s favorite seeds and prevent selective eating. Seeds are also a great option for foraging opportunities, even if the bird is eating a pelleted staple diet, as it gives variety and interest.
You can also choose to offer hard boiled eggs. The shell is high in calcium, and the yolk and whites are high in protein and other nutrients, making it a great addition during moulting. Crushing the egg makes it easier for the bird to eat, though they will pick at it in whatever form it is presented.
